Maple Gingerbread Cookies

These gingerbread cookies are so fun and easy to make with your little ones! We had a crew of little kids come over for a cookie decorating day and these were a hit. Made with wholesome ingredients and not a lot of fuss these will definitely become our go-to holiday cookie from now on!

This time of the year it can be really tricky to navigate all of the super processed sugar and junk that is offered to our children. And while I’m all for the celebrations I do like to make most of our treats at home and bring them with us to parties and gatherings so we can contribute something that I feel good about serving my kids and their friends. These cookies fit the bill and I think Santa will appreciate them too when he gets a plate of them on Xmas Eve! My oldest girl Pepper cannot wait to make another batch for Santa this weekend!

The kids loved decorating these with a really easy maple cream cheese frosting (recipe below) and a few dark chocolate chips for good measure. These cookies are so fun I hope that you and your little one’s enjoy them as much as we do!

Happy holidays everyone!

Maple Gingerbread Cookies

PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES    COOK TIME: 10 MINUTES    SERVES: 20-30 cookies

  • 2 cups sprouted spelt flour (I like the light spelt flour from Second Spring) OR Whole wheat flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

  • 1/4 teaspoon unrefined salt

  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup

  • 1/4 cup whole milk

  • 2 Tablespoons blackstrap molasses

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 1 cup whole milk cream cheese, room temperature

  • 4 Tablespoons pure maple syrup

  • pinch of fine sea salt

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 375F and place a rack in the middle of the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.

  2. In a large mixing bowl (or with an electric stand mixer) mix together all of the ingredients until a dough forms. If the dough seems to dry you can add a touch more milk. Form the dough into a ball and lightly flatten it with your hands. Wrap it in cheesecloth or a towel and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to chill.

  3. Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface into about 1/4 inch thickness. Use your favorite cookie cut outs to make cookies. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 7-10 minutes depending on the size/thickness of your cookies.

  4. While the cookies bake prepare the frosting. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and use an electric mixer to beat the ingredients together until smooth and creamy. This also works well with an immersion blender.

  5. Once your cookies have cooled decorate them to your liking!
