Wild Blueberry Steamers

This winter I am on a mission to keep my family’s immune systems as healthy as possible. It’s enevibtle that we’ll all get sick at some point but I think the severity and duration of most seasonal viruses can be cut short when we keep our bodies as healthy as possible. I know that is easier said than done when you have small children to feed. It can be a challenge to get all of those nourishing, good for our body foods in when it’s the holidays or our children are just going through a picky eating phase (I feel you parents!) That’s were these wild blueberry steamers come in! Wild blueberries are one of the most highly concentrated antioxidant rich foods on the planet! Their composition is different than that of cultivated blueberries (which are still good for you but don’t carry the same amount of benefits). They are naturally low in sugar, and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components of wild blueberries defend cells from toxins. They have been scientifically connected to better gut health, brain health, cancer prevention, urinary tract health and a reduced risk of developing diabetes (when these are consumed on a regular basis). Not only that, but they taste amazing and my kids love them!

These wild blueberry steamers are a great way to start the day. We use wild blueberry juice, local raw milk, a scoop of collagen for added protein (and the collagen makes these steamers extra frothy!) A Medjool date for a touch of added sweetness and a little cinnamon for good measure. The whole family loves these little steamers and I love how nourishing they are for all of us. A few things to note- If you don’t have wild blueberry juice on hand you can use frozen wild blueberries and blend them with all the ingredients and then pour everything through a strainer. Though I highly recommend stocking up on some wild blueberry juice (if your local market doesn’t carry it you can buy some online easily!)

I hope you and your little one’s enjoy these steamers as much as we do! Pair them with the wild blueberry & Oat Muffins for a cozy winter morning together!

Cheers!

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 Medjool date, pitted and roughly chopped

  • 1/3 cup wild blueberry juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 Tablespoon unflavored collagen powder (optional)

Preparation

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat add your milk and date. Bring to a simmer, whisking often (making sure to not scorch the milk). Once warmed to your liking remove from the heat.

Notes

If you can’t find wild blueberry juice you can use frozen wild blueberries- I would recommend using 1/2 cup and then straining everything at the end).
